WoT03_TheDragonReborn

The Dragon Reborn is the third book of the series, and its the first book without the main view point being from the protagonist. A great contrast from the previous books. Although there is some chapters from Rand’s perspective, the majority of the book is expressed through the eyes of others. The Dragon Reborn was intended to be the last book of the series.

In the Great Hunt, at the last scene of the book we find Rand Al’Thor wounded from a battle he fought with one of the Forsaken. This battle was seen in the skies over Falme. The whole city, and perhaps other cities have seen the battle as well. From this all men are seeking for the one they call The Dragon Reborn. However, Rand is unsure if he is the one, even though Moiraine has proclaimed him to be. She cautions him not to join himself with the armies that are crying out for him in the unstable nations of Tarabon, Almoth Plain, Arad Domon.  An invasion of Trollocs descends on the camp, and Rand  unable to master the One Power only manages to light a few trees on fire. Rand has reached his limit, and sneaks from the camp to head to Tear to  draw the prophecied sword “Callandor” from the famed fortress the Stone of Tear. If he is able to draw the Sword That Cannot be Touched then according to prophecies he is the Dragon Reborn.

Nynaeve, Egwene, Elayne, and some others are on there way to Tar Valon with Mat in tow. He is being brought to Tar Valon to be healed by Aes Sedai, and for the connection with the dagger to finally be broken, or else he will die.

From this point the plot thickens, and all the major characters end up in Tear with Rand. There is a climactic ending, with many great fighting scenes…and at the end it is being declared with certainty that Rand Al’Thor is The Dragon Reborn.

Prophecies of the book:

1. And his paths shall be many, and who shall know his name, for he shall be born among us many times, in many guises, as he has been and ever will be, time without end. His coming shall be like the sharp edge of the plow, turning our lives in furrows from out of the places where we lie in our silence. The breaker of bonds; the forger of chains. The maker of futures; the unshaper of destiny.

-from Commentaries on the Prophecies of the Dragon,

by Jurith Dorine, Right Hand to the Queen of Almoren,

742 Ab, the Third Age

2. And it was written that no hand but his should wield the Sword held in the Stone, but he did draw it out, like fire in his hand, and his glory did burn the world. Thus did it begin. Thus do we sing his Rebirth. Thus do we sing the beginning.

-from Do’in Toldara te, Songs of the Last Age,

Quarto Nine: The Legend of the Dragon. Composed by Boanne, Songmistress at Taralan, the Fourth Age.
